"Your body is a physical report card of your discipline."
Over 50% of American churchgoers are overweight or obese — higher than the general population. And 76% of American pastors are overweight or obese, with Baptists leading the way. The men preaching self-control can't control themselves.
I'm not saying that to attack anyone. I'm saying it because it proves a point nobody in the church wants to admit: we separated the body from the spirit — and we're losing both.
THE DISCONNECT
We compartmentalize our lives. The spiritual box gets church, prayer, and Bible. The physical box gets food, gym, and sleep. Two departments. Two separate fights.
That's the lie. They move together. Always. What you let slide physically slides spiritually. When you give in to every physical impulse, you train yourself to give in to every other impulse — in your marriage, your business, your faith.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT
Every time you resist an impulse, you are physically rewiring your brain. Neuroscience calls it neuroplasticity. You're building actual neural pathways. The more you repeat the decision, the stronger that pathway gets.
In the late 1960s, psychologist Walter Mischel ran the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment. Children were given one marshmallow and told: wait 15 minutes without eating it and you'll get a second one. The children who waited showed dramatically better life outcomes decades later — higher incomes, lower obesity rates, better relationships, lower addiction rates.
One decision at age four predicted how their entire life unfolded.
Fine-Tuning Is Overrated. Learn When It Actually Matters.
Every engineer building with LLMs eventually hits the fine-tuning question. The answer is usually "not yet."
In this free online session, Gauntlet AI Lead Instructor Aaron Gallant breaks down fine-tuning, PEFT, and QLoRA – what they actually do, what they cost, and when they're worth reaching for over prompt engineering or better context.
You'll walk away understanding how to synthesize training data from frontier models, how parameter-efficient techniques let you train on a laptop, and why the real bottleneck is always the data, not the model.
If you've been curious about fine-tuning but aren't sure it's the right move for your use case, this is the session.

The same part of your brain that says "I deserve this food" is the same part that says "I deserve to check out of my marriage today." Same voice. Same decision center. Beat it in one area and you beat it everywhere.
PAUL KNEW
"I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others, I myself should be disqualified." — 1 Corinthians 9:27
He didn't say God would disqualify him. He said he would disqualify himself — by losing the physical battle. You cannot preach dominion while being dominated.
NOBODY IS FORCING YOU
Your body is the only thing in life that is 100% yours. Nobody is putting food in your mouth. Nobody is holding you to your bed. Every habit your body reflects — that's you. Only you.
EVERYONE IS WATCHING
Your kids don't do what you say. They do what you do. Research shows children of physically active fathers are significantly more likely to be active themselves. Your son is watching how you respond when life gets hard. Your wife already knows. The people who follow you are deciding whether to trust your leadership based on whether you can govern yourself first.
GOD ALREADY GAVE YOU WHAT YOU NEED
"For God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power and love and self-control." — 2 Timothy 1:7
You're not waiting on God to give you self-control. You're waiting on yourself to use what He already gave you.
The flesh is not a side issue. It is one of our main issues. Until we settle it, nothing else settles.
THREE QUESTIONS TO SIT WITH THIS WEEK
What appetite have you been negotiating with instead of fighting?
What has your lack of self-control already cost you — in your body, your family, your faith?
What is one decision you can make today, before the next test shows up, that starts rewiring the pattern?
The flesh war is real. Fight it like it is.
